NW Briefs | Huskies baseball picks up first win
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — After dropping the first game of a doubleheader 6-3, the Washington baseball team got six hits each from Bradley Boyer and Aaron Russell to cruise to its first win of the season, beating UC Riverside 19-4 in the nightcap Saturday at Riverside Sports Complex.
Boyer was 6 for 7 with two doubles, a run and seven runs batted in, while Russell was 6 for 6 with five runs, a double and one RBI for the Huskies (1-2) in Game 2.
UW softball splits
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Ashlyn Watson hit a two-run home run to lead the 22nd-ranked Washington softball team past host New Mexico 3-2 at the Lobo Invitational. Earlier in the day, the Huskies lost 18-0 to Wichita State in five innings.
Washington (6-5-1) rebounded in the nightcap behind pitcher Caitlin Noble (5-3), who allowed five hits, two earned runs and five walks in a complete game.
Men's basketball
Rob Diederichs' two free throws with 46 seconds left broke a 57-57 tie and sent Seattle Pacific (17-6, 9-5 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) to a 61-57 victory over Western Oregon in Monmouth, Ore.
• Chris Bryant scored 22 points and Carl Arts had 21 as host Alaska Anchorage (22-4, 13-1 GNAC) beat Seattle U. 73-60. Ryan Coldren led the Redhawks (16-8, 9-6) with 17 points.
• Brandon Foote's game-high 15 points helped Central Washington (17-6, 11-3 GNAC) defeat Western Washington 68-58 in Bellingham. Steve Alford led the Vikings (13-10, 6-8) with 11 points.
Women's basketball
Jackie Hollands scored a game-high 16 points for No. 2 Seattle Pacific (24-0, 15-0 GNAC), which rolled to an easy 82-63 victory over host Montana State Billings.
• Northwest Nazarene used a 10-0 run late in the second half to pull out a 69-61 victory over Seattle University (14-9, 5-9 GNAC) at Connolly Center.

• Leada Berkey scored 14 of her game-high 17 points in two critical stretches as Western Oregon defeated Western Washington (8-19, 5-10 GNAC) 65-57 in Bellingham.
Other baseball
Shea Vucinich's run-scoring single broke a 3-3 tie and highlighted a five-run eighth inning as Washington State (1-1) defeated Creighton 8-3 in Pullman.
• Central Washington (3-7) swept a doubleheader from Corban College, 4-1 and 8-4, in Ellensburg.
• Gonzaga (0-2) dropped a 12-2 decision to No. 27 Oklahoma State in Stillwater.
Track and field
Washington State high jumpers Trent Arrivey (7 feet, 1 ½ inches) and Ebba Jungmark (6-2) soared to improve NCAA qualifying marks with wins at the WSU Open II in Pullman.
Other Cougars winners included Princess Joy Griffey (60 meters, 7.59), Selena Galaviz (400 meters, 58.08), Robert Williams (60-meter hurdles, 8.12) and Moreno Zapata (triple jump, 48-8 ¼).
Men's tennis
Washington (6-4), ranked 27th, rolled to a 6-1 victory over No. 62 Arkansas at Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Huskies' Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan took down 95th-ranked Blake Strode at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2).
Women's tennis
Washington freshman Venise Chan dominated seventh-ranked Susie Babos of California 6-0, 6-1 at Nordstrom Tennis Center, but the Bears took a 5-2 decision from the Huskies (8-3, 0-2 Pac-10).
Gymnastics
Wins from Tracy Smith (vault, 9.600), Ashley Domres (bars, 9.675) and Anissa Madrid (beam, 9.625) helped lead Seattle Pacific (2-7) to a 187.500-186.550 victory over Air Force at Royal Brougham Pavilion.

• Washington State has added safety LeAndre Daniels from San Leandro, Calif., to its recruiting class, according to Cougfan.com. Daniels (6 feet 1, 193 pounds) is the second addition to the recruiting class since the official signing date of Feb. 6. The other addition was Louis Bland, a star running back/defensive back from Central Catholic High School in Modesto, Calif. Bland (6-0, 205) is expected to play strong safety for WSU.
