New York Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina is continuing his torrid stretch. He’s now won 5 straight starts and is currently tied for the American League lead in wins with 6. Mussina baffled the Tampa Bay Rays all night long. Moose allowed 1 run and 5 hits over 6 and 1/3 innings, striking out 4. Moose did have to escape a couple big james.
In the 2nd inning, Dioner Navarro hit a single to center field, an easy hit that Cliff Floyd would have easily been able to advance to send. Instead, Floyd attempted to reach third and was gunned down by Melky Cabrera. The play was a lot closer then it looked, but the Melk Man put the ball in the exact spot it needed to be to get the call. After that play thou, Moose was almost untouchable only giving up 2 hits the rest of the way.
So could Hank Steinbrenner’s ripping of Mussina, actually paid off? Since saying he needs to pitch more like the Philadelphia Phillies’ Jamie Moyer, he’s been very effective. In the 5 starts since, Mussina is 5-0 with a 2.76 era in 5 starts, striking out 17 in 29 and 1/3 innings pitched. Those are vintage Moose numbers right there folks. If you’ve got him in fantasy don’t count on that keeping up thou, he’s going to give up his fair share of runs when the talent level he faces increases. Those last 5 starts have included match-ups against the Cleveland Indians, Rays, Seattle Mariners and the Chicago White Sox.
BUT, as a Yankees fan, sit back and enjoy the show. While our hitters are sleep walking we need all the starts like this we can get!
